The Church of “St. George Ruyan” of 14th century
In the village of Oreshets, 15 km from Belogradchik, the church of St. George Ruyan is nestled. It was built in the 14th century, and its frescoes were made four centuries later by masters from the Debar School.
What makes them so intriguing is the fact that a very unusual story is told through supposedly Orthodox symbolism about the creators and rulers of the world and their relationship with man. Concepts of the afterlife are intertwined, coming from the Ancient Egypt mythology, Bogomilism and even a lot of information about the calendar, the structure of the world and the nature of the Creator.
